kate: execute scripts (python, perl, ...)?

Ah, sorry, forgot to mention that it is a plugin that you need to 
enable first. See Settings -> "Configure Kate" -> "Build Module"

In my German Ubuntu 12.04 + KDE 4.9/PPA it's called 
"Erstellen-Modul". Enable that and you should have the Build menu.

The plugin is in the package kate-data which should be installed 
along with Kate.

Well, I use Vim most of the time. In the past I used KDevelop for 
more complex things (though I'm just a hobby programmer and don't 
really have a need for a full blown IDE).
