Subject: [kde] Re: Kaffeine and playing files from off the local network

If an MS platform plays the file off the NAS, then the NAS is setup for MS
Windows networking, smb/small-message-block. On Linux, that's handled by
samba. Do you have that installed and the requisite kernel options
enabled? (If you're running a distribution kernel, then the kernel
options are likely enabled. If you build your own, you'd need to enable
them.)

Your problem is definitely that whatever kaffeine uses for smb network
play isn't configured or working correctly, tho.

I forgot to mention that mp3's(amarok), pdf, tars, jpegs, end everything else
work fine so I suspect that the problem is purely what kaffeine needs to play
via the network. Others who have toyed with samba for the same reason find that
many things wont work but that kaffeine does. My guess is that xine-smb comments

are way out of date so my best bet may be to try and compile the latest xine and

hopefully not break my multimedia. Or switch player in the hope that it uses the

latest way of accessing the files. A catch here is that some such insist on
downloading the file 1st which defeats the object really. Info is scant.

I can enable nfs on the nas but am not sure how this relates to kde because if
it means console bashing every time I use it I will loose interest rapidly. I'm
basically determined to do all from the de. Maybe nfs works as I feel a network
file transfer should - the app just gets a files as it would from a local disc.
The data rate and content may vary but that's the apps problem. The fact that it

isn't local isn't it's problem at all.

;-) Sorry for bleat. The bulk of my work has been on the automotive side. Here
where
the responsibilities lie is often of crucial importance.

The nas by the way is pure linux running xt3. I have 2 hobbies - microscope and
astronomy and other interests that must unfortunately involve windoze. Linux
too. It has to be a mix. The nas serves as an insanely large usb stick that
remains connected to all on my network. I use open source windoze stuff when I
can as well.

Pure linux nas - makes me wonder about all of the usage blurb attached to os.
Maybe it should include a "pay the open source foundation per sale" clause where

ever it's effectively been sold on in products. Money could be used to maintain
it and pursue it's rights.
Currently anyone that feels like it just hijacks it.

John
