I had the same problem (00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel  
Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics  
Controller (rev 03)) on a macbook 2,1 and solved it removing the blur  
effect:

System-settings --> Desktop Effects --> All effects

This solved my problem.

If it doesn't work I'd try to disable all desktop effect, see if the  
problem still there, if it doesn't then try to re enable those that  
you need one by one, to identify the buggy one.
