I have the same(?) problem since I upgraded to openSuse 11.3 from 11.2
Laptop with Intel GM45 according Xorg.0.log (i915 kernel driver)
lspci tells me "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)"

I found out that this has something to do with "kernel mode setting", which was introduced
in this newer kernel.

It probably is this problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26345

I had lock-ups of the whole X server when running some openGL game (warzone) after a while.
The /var/log/messages contained a lot of

Jul 30 19:31:04 eiwrk039 kernel: [194252.285395] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Jul 30 19:31:04 eiwrk039 kernel: [194252.285706] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000000
Jul 30 19:31:04 eiwrk039 kernel: [194252.285728] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting 6476216 at 6476212)

and I had to reboot the machine.

Yesterday I looked for a solution, as it never happend with openSuse 11.2 and I did the following workaround:

I included the 11.2 repository in yast and downgraded the xserver and xorg-x11-driver-video,
but what I found out is that even the older xorg intel driver detected the newer kernel to have the kernel mode setting
available and I had the problem again.
But what helped was to add the option "nomodeset" as kernel parameter in /boot/grub/menu.lst

No more lock-ups until now.

What would be interesting, if the problem would also be solved when only nomodeset is used even with the current X-server/driver,
but I did not test that for now ...
