different resolutions in virtual desktop

Sorry but I am absolutely confused. I am quite sure that in clone mode I
must have the same resolution. I see that the optimal resolution of my tv
must be 1024x768 and my monitor LCD must be 1400x900. Could I do panning
with this to can see my TV with 1024x768.
