Trouble with KDED on Debian - input appreciated

FYI: 

It seems that all the issues were indeed created by the KDED.

The root of the problem appears to have been that KDE wanted to start
both the KDE4 and the KDE3 kded, but uninstalling the KDE3 kded is not
possible because the package dependencies of Debian then want to
uninstall almost all KDE dependencies.

So I moved the KDE3 daemon out of the way, and instead made it a
symbolic link to the KDE4 kded binary - and all the issues disappeared.
