It should not have been necessary for you to do anything at all.  Your old 
settings are usually found and used.  Anyway, 
http://userbase.kde.org/KMail/FAQs_Hints_and_Tips#Migration gives a list of 
the files that you need to check for.  You'll probably find that you missed 
the mailtransports, emaildefaults and emailidentities files
