For the KMail-embedded link Kuickshow is used as the viewer.

Konqueror's File Associations Embedding tab lists

   ShowImg Image Viewer (showimg)
   Embeddable Image Viewer (khtmlimage)
   KView Image Viewer (kviewviewer)

Maybe prior (to 3.5.10) versions defaulted to one of the other 2 viewers?
