[4.3.0] Session always starts with compositing suspended

I upgraded to KDE 4.3.0 from 4.2.4 (on a Gentoo 64-bit system).  I have 
Desktop Effects enabled, but when KDE starts, compositing is always 
suspended and I have to go to System Settings and click the "Resume 
compositing" button (Alt+Shift+F12 never worked.)

Is there something I can do about it?
