Just to offer a different point of view, if you are completely new to
KDE I would not suggest starting of learning KDE3 now. KDE4 is very
different, the way of the future and the latest KDE 4.2 release is
pretty stable.
I am not sure what you think would be confusing about adding KDE4 to
your ubuntu 9.04 box ? - It can co-exist with gnome just fine, and you
can switch between the two at login time.
I would suggest this, instead of starting of learning KDE3, which you
will eventually have to largely forget and relearn with KDE4.
