All applications starting maximized

Somehow, I've managed to get KDE4 into a state in which all application
windows are starting maximized.

I have no idea at all what I did to cause this, but I would be most
appreciative if someone could help me stop this behaviour.

FWIW, when I right click the title of an application, I see that the
"Maximize" option is always ticked.

PS I've looked in what to me is the obvious place: System Settings | Window
Behaviour, but I don't see anything there that would cause applications to
start maximized, even if I wanted to set the configuration to do that.
