KDE mouse miles

Every time I use a window based system I really wonder about the way menus pop 
up. They allways go left to right unless there isn't any more screen 
available.

Why don't they go right,left,right,.left and so on to minimise mouse movement?
Hope Gates doesn't pattent it. Admittedly they would need offsetting a bit to 
allow for going back to the previous menu but why do I have to move the 
curser anything up to 3ins to select from the next menu? That's crap.
