Thanks. I'm pretty sure I've already seen the Plasma FAQ, unless there is
more than one, but it's certainly worth reading again.

I imagine the panel is in fact running, but for some reason invisible. A
right-click on the area where you would expect it to be brings up the context
menu.

Yes, that's why I like to arrange everything consistently. It saves a lot of
time and effort.
In this case, though, it can't be anything to do with either Mandriva or
upstream, since my ancient laptop is running the same version as this (the
Acer) and everything is as expected there.
Oh, yes, one thing I discovered after the last reply - clicking on the clock
brings up the shadow of a box, but no calendar. Again, the calendar display
is perfect on the old laptop. Peculiar.
