mail and settings lost due to disk full - kmail 1.10.3

Hi all,
I've experienced this twice, and it is really annoying. If there is no more 
disk space kmail warns me with a dialog, and then when I close it and re-open, 
all my mails and my settings are lost. I've to manually extract them from a 
backup, recreate the settings, sets the folders, the filters....and so on.
Is there a fix or a workaround to avoid this? Is there a way to export all the 
settings and the filters so that I can eventually reload them?
