Destroyed my Display

Yesterday I tried to change the screen saver on my Fedora 10 Workstation
running KDE 4.1.3 and accidentally went in to the Display settings.
This resulted in my display immediately switching to 800x600 (it should
be 1280x1024, but that option doesn't show up there and I had to use
system-config-display from a root command line to get it to work when I
installed the O/S and again yesterday to get the display back to
1280x1024).
I did find the list of available screen savers (only 2!) in
/usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers -- kblank.desktop and
krandom.desktop.
I tried to turn on the random desktop and *think* I left it enabled, but
saw no change in the screensaver.
I then ran various other non-related tasks until late in the evening and
thinking that a reboot was in order, powered down the workstation.
When I powered it on this AM, I signed on as usual and got a blank
screen where the KDE desktop should be -- a faint outline indicated
where my usual xterminal window would be.
I am now operating under Gnome, which works fine -- at least this
eliminates hardware issues.
To fix this should I
1. delete all my personal KDE settings?
2. re-install KDE?
3. both of the above?
4. something else I haven't thought of?
Any insights would be appreciated -- I am having fits trying to find
things under Gnome!
Thanks in advance,
