to assess loading of small applications

Five panels, one taskbar, pager and a number of applets are hosted by my
laptop workplace.
Striving to improve performance, i would like to assess how much is each of
those small applications  weighting down my system, in terms of cpu usage,
ram usage, disk access.   
Any suggestions?
Should one avoid java applets, to start with?
