Default file associations

Hi,

I've asked this question before and received a number of different
answers, none of which worked.  Most recently I tried setting 
default "open with" preferences by configuring them on a
brand-new account and then replacing other accounts ".kde*" stuff
with the result.  This caused kde to be unstartable on the other
accounts.

Please could someone actually try doing this and let me know what works
for them??

I'm running kde 3.5.8 on freebsd 7.0.
