How to set up my kbd to be able to use French accents when replying to email in Kmail

Replying to my own post, I seem to have solved the problem using Kxkb. I have 
been able to keep my qwerty layout by using the Canadian keyboard layout, and 
now have the additional, é, è, à, ç, etc.
