utf8 for FAT filesystems?

Hello,
when KDE mounts my external FAT formatted harddisk syslog prints that message:

Jun  7 22:46:13 horus FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT 
filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!

Is being case sensitive the only drawback of utf8? Are there any other 
disadvantages?
