trying to make funky kmail boxes go away

i use just kmail rather than all of kde, but i noticed that during an upgrade 
in the somewhat recent past, funky boxes started showing up whenever i 
pressed ctrl:

i'm told they're accessibility features, but i cant seem to find the location 
in kcontrol to turn them off ... someone point me in the right direction ? :)
