It is usually a lot better to create an archive which will set useful 
file/directory ownership when extracting.

Quite a number of problems related to restoring a mail backup are caused by 
copying for example ~/Mail to a different machine where the same user has 
different unix user ID, etc.

That would be great, backup and restore of mail related data (mails, filters, 
identities, contacts) is one of the frequently asked items on our user 
mailinglists and on kde-forum
