what is this box in kmail?

I may be wrong, but the most likely explanation to me is that it is Pager 
indicating a change in virtual desktop from x to 1. When raised from the 
system tray, kmail will take you to whatever vd it was started on, so if 
you're raising it from say vd2 then you will perhaps get this number 
appearing in the center of your screen. I believe that Pager can be told not 
to do this if it's a nuisance.
