KDE 3.4 - unlock session problem

Have you actually tested to check that kcheckpass is authenticating you? It 
needs to be owned by root and setuid root (chown root.root kcheckpass; chmod 
+s kcheckpass)

Try running kcheckpass in konsole, and then typing in the password for that 
user. If it says authentication failure please check your permissions.
