many open kio slaves

I wonder why there are so many open (unused?) kio slaves - is
this misconfiguration, a kde bug or intended? I'm running KDE
3.3.2 on SuSE 9.0.

Besides being a waste of resources, which actually doesn't bug
_me_, it's really annoying that I cannot access my ftp server -
which allows only 2 simultaneous connections from one machine -
after some time reading/editing(kate)/writing files from/to it
without manually killing the slave's processes.

As an example here are kmail's slaves (I use only 2 pop and 2/3
smtp accounts (3 configured, 2 used)) after starting kontact 3
minutes ago:

$ ps x|grep kontact
