Character sets in Konsole

Since I switched to KDE 3.2 and SuSE 9.1 konsole no longer displays any
characters but plain ASCII (< 128). All characters beyond ASCII are -
depending on the font selected - either left blank, are displayed as a
rectangle or as a white question mark in a black oval. This even applies
to ISO-Latin 1 characters as the German Umlauts. Of course, the locale
is set up. LANG=de_DE or LANG=cs_CZ or whatever.

When I start an xterm from konsole, Xterm displays these characters
correctly, accorting to the selected locale.

I'm clueless, please help. Probably this can be fixed very easily, but
I could not find a way ... I even do not know whether it's konsole or
SuSE...
