This sounds like the SuSE-Problem, that was discussed before. My last 
posting to this topic was on Apr. 7th on this list, subj:
"Re: [kde] Kopete sound notification"
The problem is, that knotify is not started by the startup-script. So make 
one special line two solved it for many people. If you do not find it in 
the archives, I will send it to you by PM.
