KDE not showing thumbnails

Since some moment in the past (a few days, I guess) KDE have lost the ability 
to show image previews. When I open a folder which contains images, Konqueror 
stays loading the page and the System Monitor Kicker Applet shows a large 
yellow bar (I haven't figured out yet what kind of CPU power it represents). 
When I do a ps aux, I see many (dozens) kdeinit: kio_thumbnails processes 
consumig a lot of CPU, but nothing happens in a long time, only more and more 
processes like those being created.
Have any of you guys had such a behaviour?
I'm using KDE 3.2 on Mandrake 10.0
