Just to follow up, looking at the issue a bit more, I figured out the
more elegant way to do it is to say:
echo 'FIREFOX_OPEN_IN="tab"' >> ~/.mozilla-firefoxrc
as the user for whom you would like to change the behaviour. There is
also an /etc/mozilla-firefox/mozilla-firefoxrc file for setting the
default global behaviour. Once again: this may vary between
distributions.
