maildir to the format mbox?

You didn't ask about special folder... You can probably do similar magic by 
doing the renaming part directly in the .Mail directory. A question
to ask is this: Is it important that the inbox is in mbox format?

No. This risk of misunderstaning is too great. If you investigate the .Mail
directory you may be able to figure it out though.
