full-screen application and hiding panel

Hi

is it possible to have a hiding panel to come up when I have a 
full-screen window showing?

I use full-screen && hiding-panel to get maximum estate for my editor.
but I when I set a window to full-screen I seem to be able to switch to 
another application only by alt-tab, while I'd really like the panel to 
show up when I move my mouse to the bottom edge (where the panel hides). 
any tricks ?
