did something stupid; now I have no icons

here are the set of steps that I took...
% sudo kcontrol
...navigate to Appearance - Icons
...removed Crystal SVG Beta
...installed Crystal SVG 1.0
...clicked Apply
...all icons vanish.
...tried changing to another set of icons
...still nothing.


...right clicked on an application launcher in the taskbar
...clicked Properties
...tried changing the icon (which is an empty gray box)
...KDE Crash Handler displays

This backtrace appears to be useless.
This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents

Any help is appreciated.  I can survive without icons but waiting for
each tool tip to pop up is a bit of a pain.  Thanks!
