Difference between Italic and Bold Italic?

I found some that do work correctly, most of them are serif fonts.
Personally, I use a lot of sans-serif fonts like Areal. Many of these
fonts do not appear to work correctly. I guess that sounds more like a
Xft/Freetype/Fontconfig problem.
