KDE 3.2.1: All Applications crash when pointed at

Mystery solved  - it  was the kernel and/or XFree 4.2.1. An update of both
XFree86 from  4.2.1 to 4.4.0 and one from kernel 2.4.19 to 2.4.26 did the trick. 

Funny I should have been the only person to have experienced this.
