In this case I would look at Video drivers, and hardware capability, (yep, NOT 
compatibility).  It may be, (and I don't recall you saying), that you don't 
have enough video ram to support the switching.  I know some early versions 
of the radeon vid drivers were very finicky.  Even now there are times when I 
hold my breath doing this.  I get back to my KDE session and it just sits 
there for a while.

I meant to ask before but forgot, is this a laptop, or desktop, and how much 
RAM and Video RAM does it have?  What kind of video card does it use?
