KDM Error

I'm attempting to use KDM on a new installation and having problems.

KDE is self-compiled, living in /opt. /opt/bin/kde/kdm functions perfectly
when run under debian, but when called from a new installation returns the
error:

kdm: relocation error: kdm: undefined symbol: _XdmcpWrapperToOddParity

ldd opt/kde/bin/kdm returns:

libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x40017000)
libcrypt.so.1 => /lib/libcrypt.so.1 (0x400ea000)
libresolv.so.2 => /lib/libresolv.so.2 (0x40117000)
libutil.so.1 => /lib/libutil.so.1 (0x40128000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4012b000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40260000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

All these files are present in the new installation and KDE itself works
perfectly when called from startx. Any thoughts on what might be causing this
error?

Thanks,

Jeff Elkins
