kde not recognizing correct password

I had a similar problem a while back which turned out to be related to PAM. If 
you use PAM on your system you may try playing with the kde configuration for 
it, for example I had to remove the line:

auth      requisite pam_securetty.so

from my /etc/pam.d/kde file as X was starting on a virtual terminal not listed 
in /etc/securetty.
