Hello,

I have a SBLive! MP3+ 5.1 soundcard, and am running Mandrake Linux 9.1, using
ALSA version 0.9.0rc8: emu10k1 (installed with the distro), and KDE 3.1.0. By
all accounts, this combination should work without much of a problem. but
I've not been able to play anything but audio CDs (which tells me that the
speakers, and their connections to the sound card are working, I hope).

Whenever I un-mute the PCM channel I get random spurts of static, and an
electronic 'vroom-vroom' sound when I even move the PCM slider. When I
attempt to play a sound file, I get an increased amount of static, until the
playing stops (which seems to suggest that something is going right). In
fact, if I try to change the sound device to /dev/dsp in KDE control center,
it can't, then switches to the NULL device, which promply silences my
speakers. When using audio method ALSA, "artsshell status" returns "device:
default"

Attached are the results of what I'm told are fairly universal
troubleshooting diagnostics. I'm posting this to this particular list
because I read that one and only one incarnation of artsd should be running
at any given time. I get at least three and sometimes more. These all
appear on the process table as zombies (if that's what the little ghost is
meant to signify. Also, when no files are being played (not to glorify the
static that I hear), the command "/sbin/fuser-v dev/dsp" has nothing whatever
to say. Should this be the case?

Just because I'm on this topic, I read somewhere that APIC (whatever that is)
can interfere with sound. "dmesg" returns the phrase:
"local APIC disabled by BIOS --reenabling
	 found and enabled APIC"

comments?

Any kick in the right direction would be appreciated.
In particular, any surefire way to eliminate the possibility that my card is
kaput.

Less urgent, and possible more germane to this list, is the curious habit of
Kmix to reset my master volume to its highest level. Even curiouser is that
its highest level (with the slider all the way up) is 31% (lowest is still
0%). aumix says 100, and alsamixergui is also full throttle (so to speak).

With an advance of thanks,
	Jim
