Invisible help (more font troubles)

The regular text of KDE help files is invisible on my KDE 2.2.2 system
running on Debian/testing. I have a lot of probably related font
problems, but I'm hoping solving this will give clues to the others.

The text is actually visible for a split second when I first move into
a page. But then it's gone. The table of contents and graphics still
show.

I definitely have some fonts that appear blank on the system; for
example, KDE Control Center | Look & Feel | Fonts and hit the Choose
button shows a large list of fonts, but many are blank in the preview
pane. Applications that show a drop down list of styled font families
have blank lines. And Konqueror renders TT fonts blank, though
Mozilla 1.0, running under KDE, sees them fine.

I have reconfigured the system fonts and Konqueror fonts so they all
correspond to visible fonts, but it doesn't help the help center.
http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde&m=103348555310522&w=2 seems to indicate
that by 2.2.2 help uses Konqueror fonts. It has no separate place to
specify fonts in the UI.

The recent discussion about fonts on this list seems to apply only to
KDE 3. I have no ~/.qt/qtrc file, and can't see how to run qtconfig
or kde-font (but perhaps I'm not understanding).

I did try clearing out my .kderc and .gtkrc-kde; it didn't help. I've
looked in .qt and .kde for anything that looks suspicious, without
luck.

I have also tried a built from source KDE 3.1.2 (as well as earllier
ones), and judging from the presence of .qt/qt_plugins_3.?rc files I
seem to have run it under my main account a bit (I try not to). So it
may have affected something, but I don't know what. The newer KDE and
Qt are off in subdirectories that my account doesn't ordinarily see,
and should be invisible at the moment (not on PATH or LD_PATH). Fonts
aren't great under that setup either....

Obviously, what I would really like is to make all my fonts visible to
KDE. However, as a point of curiosity or a desperate hack, how does
KHelpCenter decide what fonts it uses?

Thanks.

P.S. XFree86 4.2.1
