slow ftp downloads

Hello, I'm running kde 3.1.2 on slackware 8.1 and ftp downloads from the local network seem to be quite slow compared to other ftp clients. Is there any way to tune this ?

comparison: 
konqueror (right-click, copy-to) downloads at between 1.4 and 1.8 megabytes/sec 
lftp dowloads at 9.5 megabytes/sec

kget's performance is similar to konqueror's.
