After compilation, how to start?

I have successfully compiled Arts, KDElibs and KDEbase and installed them 
into /opt/kde, however, now, I can't figure out how to use it. Starkde only 
gives me KDE2, when I set the environment vairable WINDOWMANAGER to kde3, it 
just gives me 2 when I use startx. I tried KDM, but the option for KDE is 
still KDE2. 

So, what I'm asking is, how do I start KDE3? The instructions for compilation 
and installation are really sketchy on this, and I have already tried every 
meathod mentioned. 

I'm using SuSE 7.3 as a base distribution with Xfree 4.2.0
