Printer problem: KDE 3.1

I'm attempting to add a printer and keep getting the message 'unable to add 
temporary printer' when I click the 'test' button. Very frustrating.

Between this, the permissions problem I posted (to no avail) earlier, and 
various and sundry other glitches, this 'upgrade' to 3.1 has been a miserable 
experience.
