faxing in KDE - error

Hi All
I created a .TIF file using a scanner. When I try to send this file as fax 
using the 'Send a Fax' application (Found under Utilities menu), it gives me 
following error :

Sending to fax using: /opt/KDE3.0.2/bin/fax NAME='praveen' DEV='modem' PAGE=a4 
FROM='' send  '16466075195' '/home/praveen/temp/SAVE0003.TIF' 
/home/praveen/temp/SAVE0003.TIF is an image file...efix: Fri 06 Sep 2002 
10:08:45 PM EDT Error: can't read multi-strip TIFF filesefix: 08:45 
Error: missing offset to TIFF datacan't read file 
/home/praveen/temp/SAVE0003.TIF.001

However, I can fax a text file without any problem.
Do I have to somehow covert the 'TIF' file to some other format?
