KDE 3.0.3 - Unable to lock screen

Last attempt at fixing it.  You say it works fine in a root KDE but not in a 
user.  When I had a problem with the user window on initial install, I logged 
on as root, added a fake user so I could delete the old one (but kept the 
files).  I went to the original /home/[USER] directory and renamed it  ("mv 
/home[USER] /home/[USER.old]" and reinstalled my user, then deleted the fake 
one.

Logging back in as user, I copied the documents, bookmarks, addressbook and a 
few .kdelink files to the proper places in the "renewed user" and then 
removed "rm -r /home/[USER.old]" (BE CAREFULL!!!) the old version.  It 
corrected the problem.  It appears that something was set up wrong or had 
been corrupted in the old files.

You might try that.  It takes about half an hour.
