Please read Help->Introduction to KMail. The first item in the list of 
changes will tell you what you want to know. We don't show this 
introduction screen automatically after an upgrade for nothing. Maybe 
you should read it the next time because it can always contain 
important information.

d as well as Delete are bound to "Move to Trash".
Shift+Delete is bound to "Delete".

If you want to move messages to trash then click on the trashbin icon 
instead of the delete icon.
