How did you install the fonts?
Did you copy them manually to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/
then you restarted your font server?
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs reload
Or, how did you do it?

Then, how did you configure the apps? And what apps?
You didn't say anything about having checked antialiasing.
