Error initializing sound driver

I'm running KDE2.2.2-2 under RHLinux 7.2. At the start of a KDE session, 
the following message appears:

Error while initializing the sound driver
can't start sound i/o

However, the correct sound driver is installed (checked with sndconfig) 
and the sound card is working (I can play CD's, for example).

The sound card is an Ensoniq es1371 (Audio PCI-97).

Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated.
