kmix doesn't recognise mixer devices

I'm trying to get kmix working under a Debian Woody system.  The sound
card is an M-Audio Audiophile 2496, with ALSA drivers 0.9beta12.  The
card works fine under most other situations, e.g. alsamixer, aRts
sound server, mpg123, etc, all work.  The problem is that kmix doesn't
seem to recognise any mixer devices at all, even though the
Information->Sound panel of the control centre shows that there is a
mixer present.

Any help with getting this working would be great.  TIA.
