Disappearing icons.....oops...reappearing icons

Hello everybody,

Strange things happening on my KDE 3.0 desktop. When I start kppp, then log 
off, all my icons disappear. If I close kppp. then they all come back. Very 
strange. Any ideas, suggestions or thoughts on this? Also, after closing, I 
get the msg.....KDEInit could not launch 'kppp'.....even though I had just 
used it and then closed it. Thanks for any help I can get!
