Using WM's other than KWin?

Once in a while I keep reading references to using other window managers other 
than KWin with KDE -- what is involved in changing this setting, and has 
anyone had positive experiences using other window managers (e.g. 
enlightenment, sawfish, metacity, etc...the 'ooh, pretty' sort of 
thing)...I'm just feeling in a creative mood and feel like seeing how weird 
and unique I can get my desktop to look =)  Thanks!
