Non-standard theme engine without being root

I am using KDE 2.2.2 at the university and would like to install a
non-standard theme engine for Kwin (e.g. the window decorations provided
by QNiX 0.2.1 from kde-look.org) without having superuser privileges on
that particular system.

More specifically, is it possible to put the relevant libraries (e.g.
libkwinqnix.so in the case of QNiX) somewhere in my home directory and
direct Kwin to look for them there instead of in the system-wide
directories like /usr/lib/kde2?

Thanks,
Christian
